Your Alien Registration Card (ARC) is the single most important document you hold in Korea. It is your official proof of identity and legal residence, and you will need it for almost everything — opening a bank account, signing a phone contract, registering for health insurance, and even receiving parcels. Letting it expire is one of the most common and most costly mistakes newcomers make, so it is worth understanding the renewal process well in advance.
When to renew
The expiry date is printed on the back of your card. You should begin the renewal process up to four months before that date, and you must complete it before the card expires. If your visa itself is also expiring, you renew the visa (sojourn status) and the card together in the same visit.
Do not wait until the last week. Immigration offices in Seoul, Busan and other major cities are busy, and same-day appointments are rarely available.
Step 1 — Book an appointment
Almost all immigration services now require a reservation through HiKorea (www.hikorea.go.kr):
- Create an account or log in
- Go to Reservation and choose your local immigration office
- Select the Extension of Sojourn / Reissuance of Registration Card service
- Pick the earliest available date and save your confirmation
Step 2 — Gather your documents
The exact list depends on your visa type, but you will almost always need:
- Your passport and your current ARC
- One recent passport photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm, white background)
- The completed application form (available at the office or on HiKorea)
- The fee, usually around 30,000 KRW for reissuance
- Proof of address — a rental contract, a certificate of residence, or a dormitory confirmation
- Supporting documents for your status — for students, a certificate of enrolment and transcript; for workers, an employment certificate and sometimes proof of income or tax payment
If you are unsure which documents apply to your visa, the welfare team or fellow NIDO members can usually point you in the right direction before you go.
Step 3 — Attend the appointment
Arrive early. At the office you will:
- Take a numbered ticket (or check in for your reservation)
- Submit your form and documents at the counter
- Pay the fee — many offices use a payment kiosk, so bring a card
- Have your fingerprints or photo taken if required
You will receive a receipt. Your new card is usually posted to your address within two to three weeks, or you can choose to collect it.
Costs at a glance
- Reissuance of the card: around 30,000 KRW
- Extension of stay (if also needed): around 60,000 KRW
- Passport photo: 5,000 to 10,000 KRW at a photo studio
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving it too late. Overstaying — even by a day — can result in fines and can seriously affect future visa applications and your path to permanent residency.
- Wrong photo size. Korean ID photos have strict dimensions; use a studio that knows the standard.
- Missing proof of address. If you recently moved, update your residence registration at the local community centre (dong office) first.
What if your card is lost or stolen
Report it and apply for a reissuance as soon as possible — the process is similar, but file a police report first if it was stolen. Carry a photocopy or photo of your ARC in the meantime.
Bottom line: treat your ARC like your passport. Set a phone reminder four months before it expires, and never let it lapse.
