Re-entry and travelling abroad

How to leave Korea and return without jeopardising your visa or residence.

6 min read

Travelling home to Nigeria, going on holiday, or attending to family abroad is a normal part of life — but as a foreign resident you need to make sure you can return to Korea smoothly. A little preparation prevents the nightmare of being stuck outside the country with an invalid status.

Re-entry basics

For most residents holding an ARC, re-entry is automatic as long as you return within the validity of your visa and within the standard re-entry window (commonly up to one year for long-term visa holders). You do not usually need a separate re-entry permit for short trips.

Before you book your trip

Run through this checklist:

  1. Check your visa expiry. Make sure your status will still be valid on the day you plan to return — not just the day you leave.
  2. Check your passport. Many countries (and airlines) require at least six months of passport validity.
  3. Carry both documents. Travel with your passport and your ARC together. Airlines often ask for your ARC at check-in to confirm you can re-enter Korea.
  4. Confirm your re-entry window on HiKorea if you are unsure, especially for longer absences.

When you DO need a re-entry permit

You may need to apply for a re-entry permit in advance if:

  • You will be abroad longer than your automatic re-entry period
  • Your visa rules specifically require one
  • Your status is being processed or changed

Apply through HiKorea before you leave. Leaving without sorting this out can mean your status is cancelled while you are away.

Returning to Korea

At immigration on arrival:

  • Use the foreigner lane and present your passport and ARC
  • Long-term residents may be eligible for the automated immigration gates (SeS) after a one-time registration, which saves a lot of queueing

If your visa expires while abroad

This is the situation to avoid at all costs. If your visa lapses while you are outside Korea, you may have to apply for a new visa from a Korean embassy before you can return — a slow and uncertain process. Always plan trips around your renewal dates.

Practical tips

  • Keep a digital photo of your ARC and passport in case of loss
  • Note that some banking and phone services pause if you are away for a long time
  • If you are leaving Korea permanently, there are separate steps (closing accounts, NHIS settlement, pension lump-sum refund for eligible nationals)

The simple rule: never travel if your visa will expire before you are back. Carry both documents every time, and check your re-entry window for any trip longer than a holiday.
