NIDO South Korea ("NIDO SK", "we", "us", or "our") is committed to protecting the privacy of our members and visitors. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and protect it, and the rights you have over it. We handle personal information in accordance with the Republic of Korea's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and other applicable laws.
By registering for membership or using our website, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
1. Who we are
NIDO South Korea is the Republic of Korea chapter of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation — a non-profit community body serving Nigerians living in South Korea. For the purposes of data protection law, NIDO SK is the organisation responsible for ("controller of") your personal information. You can reach our secretariat using the details in the "Contact us" section below.
2. Information we collect
We only collect information that is necessary to run the organisation and serve our members.
Information you give us when you register or update your profile:
- Full name
- Email address and phone number
- State of origin (Nigeria) and city of residence in Korea
- Profession or occupation, and the year you arrived in Korea
- Skills you are willing to share with the community (optional)
- A password, stored only in encrypted (hashed) form — we can never see it
- Emergency contact details, where you choose to provide them
Information generated as you use your membership:
- Membership status and your role within the organisation
- Event RSVPs and ticket purchases
- Dues and payment records
- Welfare requests you submit
- Messages you send to the leadership
Information collected automatically:
- Basic technical data such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you visit, used to keep the site secure and working properly.
We do not collect sensitive information (such as health, religious, or political data) except where you voluntarily include it in a welfare request, in which case it is treated with the strict confidentiality described below.
3. How we use your information
We use your personal information to:
- Create and manage your membership and verify your identity;
- Review and approve new membership applications;
- Communicate with you about events, news, meetings, and welfare matters;
- Operate the members' directory (only if you opt in — see below);
- Administer dues, donations, event tickets, and related payments;
- Coordinate confidential welfare support;
- Keep the website secure, prevent abuse, and comply with our legal obligations.
4. The members' directory
The members' directory lets members find and connect with one another. You are only listed in the directory if you opt in, and you can change this choice at any time from your dashboard. Even when you opt in, your information is visible only to other signed-in, approved members — never to the public or to search engines. Members must not export, scrape, or use directory information for marketing, spam, or any purpose other than genuine community connection.
5. Welfare confidentiality
Welfare requests are treated as strictly confidential. They are visible only to the designated welfare team and are never shown in the directory, shared with other members, or used for any unrelated purpose.
6. Sharing and disclosure
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We only share it:
- With trusted service providers who help us operate (for example, our website host or payment and communication tools), under appropriate confidentiality obligations;
- Where required by law, court order, or a lawful request from a competent authority;
- To protect the rights, safety, or property of NIDO SK, our members, or the public.
7. Data retention
We keep your personal information for as long as you remain a member and for a reasonable period afterwards, as needed to meet legal, accounting, or legitimate organisational requirements. When information is no longer needed, we securely delete or anonymise it.
8. Your rights
Under PIPA and applicable law, you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you;
- Correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete;
- Delete your information or close your account;
- Suspend or object to certain processing;
- Withdraw consent at any time (for example, by leaving the directory), without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.
To exercise any of these rights, contact our secretariat using the details below. We will respond within the timeframe required by law.
9. How we protect your information
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to keep your information safe, including encrypted passwords, access restricted on a need-to-know basis, secure hosting, and administrator access controls. While no system can be guaranteed completely secure, we work to protect your information and to respond promptly to any incident.
10. Cookies and similar technologies
Our website uses a small number of essential cookies needed to sign you in and keep the site secure. We do not use cookies to track you across other websites.
11. Children
Membership is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a minor has provided us information without appropriate consent, please contact us so we can remove it.
12. Hosting and international transfers
Our website and data may be stored on servers operated by reputable hosting providers, which may be located outside Korea. Where this is the case, we take steps to ensure your information continues to be protected to a standard consistent with this policy and applicable law.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "last updated" date and, where appropriate, notify members. Your continued use of the website after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
14. Contact us
If you have any questions, requests, or complaints about this policy or your personal information, please contact the NIDO South Korea secretariat through our Contact page. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) of Korea.
